This week we will wrap up our unit on transitive verbs, direct objects, and the capitalization and punctuation rules with a grammar test on Wednesday.
We have completed our study of O’Henry, and the students will have an opportunity to choose one writing assignment to complete as a culminating activity for that study.
In addition, the students will have a Cool Word test on Tuesday. There are only five new words on this test, so this should not create a lot of extra time studying at home.

Miss Cox's Week of December 14-18

Students will be continuing Science again this week. We will be finishing up Chapter 9. For Monday, students will need to bring in a small piece of clay, a clear plastic cup, 3 pennies (if you can find some), vinegar, salt, and tweezers. Please bring in all of the items that you are able. We will share what we can, so do not worry about what you are unable to bring in. We will work in groups, but do your best to bring in what you can. We will finish up the chapter on Tuesday, review on Wednesday, and test on Thursday, December 17th. Also, you will need to bring in an item in a brown paper bag for Friday. The item can be anything that is school appropriate. Your classmates will be using their knowledge of physical properties to determine the mystery item you brought it. It can be anything that is school appropriate (paper clips, apple, magnet, etc.) but please do not bring in items that are expensive or could break. DO NOT tell anyone what is in your bag :)

This week we will continue looking at irony through some of the works of O’Henry. We will read The Gift of the Magi this week. We will also work with using context clues within a passage in order to determine the meaning of words without having to look up every word that we don’t know.
We will also continue to work with the capitalization and punctuation rules and review what we have already studied on transitive verbs and direct objects.
If your son/daughter is still struggling with the parts of speech and classifying sentences, please encourage them to see me during lunch or recess to review. We will only continue to add to the concepts we have already studied, and it will get harder for them to make passing grades.

The Fairy Tale Booklet is due on Wednesday, November 18. The students have had over two weeks to be working on this, so they should not be up late Tuesday night cramming the work in. Please check with them this weekend to see that they have been making adequate progress.

Last week the students were introduced to transitive verbs and direct objects. We will review the new information on Monday and then spend time this week assimilating the new information into what we have already learned this year. Remember that language instruction this year is not a process of looking at one piece of information and excluding all others. All information will be pieced together to create a network of understanding. For this reason, the students should constantly be reviewing old material as they study new material.

They will show their understanding of summarizing, characterization, and comparing and contrasting as they work on their Fairy Tale booklet. Students have been assigned a Pedigree project to be done at home. Parents, please remember that this is your child's project and minimal help should be given. They have been given an expectations sheet, and the project was discussed in class. They are equipped to do the project on their own. The students have learned several new jingles and will be tested on those next week. Please have them study the jingles each night. We held off on helping verbs this past week in order to review the concepts that were taught prior to our little ‘vacation’ from school, so we will add those in next week. We will continue to explore the basic elements of literature while also while reading The Rumpelstiltskin Problem. We will use the small group model for exploring the next chapter. As we complete this chapter we will look at the complex skill of comparing and contrasting in writing using the Venn Diagram.

We will continue looking at how different words can fulfill different roles within simple sentences. The students will continue learning jingles this week. Our focus this week is on prepositions and prepositional phrases. It is extremely important for the students to pay close attention over this next few weeks and ask questions as they have them because the information given is foundational for the remainder of the year. Without it, they will struggle.

We will continue to explore the basic elements of literature while also while reading The Rumpelstiltskin Problem. We began by using a whole class model for exploring literature last week and will continue that up this week.

The students began their first writing piece on Friday in class. We will not dedicate any more class time to that, but it will be due on Thursday, Sept. 10. Please check your son/daughter’s progress on this.
